PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project is shaped by the presence of Yakushima’s ancient Yakusugi trees, whose branching structures bear the memory of the island’s deep history, persistent rainfall, and long cycles of growth and endurance. Rather than adopting these forms as visual references, the design draws from their underlying logic, translating patterns of adaptation and resilience into an architectural strategy shaped by site, climate, and landscape. Conceived as rooted above ground, the building is positioned on an existing flat area of the site to minimize earthworks and preserve mature trees. Instead of cutting into the terrain, the architecture settles lightly on the land, allowing the forest structure to remain intact. The massing branches and bends in response to site conditions, echoing the adaptive growth of Yakusugi branches. This branching configuration gently organizes programme, movement, views, and privacy, while maintaining a clear and legible spatial order.
